What do I need to learn to get my trading software talking to Excel?

An Excel RTD problem
I trade. My trading software (Sterling Trader Pro) is suppose to connect with Excel so I can do some real time data management. The proper pull down menus come up in Excel, but only the headings will move from the trading software to the spreadsheet, not the data.
The trading software's docs don't help, they don't respond to e-mails (well, I asked once anyway) and Microsoft's explanation of RTD doesn't help either.
I had to move from Mac to Windows XP to use the trading software, so my under the hood PC skills are weak. What I would like to know is what do I need to learn to solve this problem.
