You looking to have someone build you a PC, or just buying parts?

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking...

Sysbuilder.com looks to me (after a brief glance) like a typical small PC shop. Is your question about whether purchasing a computer from a small custom shop rather than from a major brand is a good idea?

In that case, my opinion is that it's certainly OK (for desktops, at least), provided that you are savvy enough to know exactly what you want, and are willing to sacrifice support/warranty for some modest cost savings (small shops often offer poor support). I bought my last desktop computer from a small/midsized company - and got what I felt was a better deal than I would have gotten from, say, Dell. However, the company I bought from has since apparently folded. The thing wouldn't be under warranty by now anyway, and I'm comfortable not having a helpdesk to turn to - but many people like having a number they can call when something goes wrong.

Response by poster: Oh, right. I'm looking to buy a custom computer from them, not parts. Kickingtheground basically answered the question, though. I know pretty well what I want, I'm just leery of having someone not me and not a manufacturer or retailer I already know of make it. Silly question, I guess.

Reseller Ratings is your new best friend. Reseller Ratings has thousands of reviews of system builders and hardware dealers written by customers themselves.

Sysbuilder has NO reviews. A quick whois shows that they've only been in business for 7 months. Further research indicates that they're probably the same company as MyAopen.com MyAopen.com got a 3.33 out of 10 at resellerratings and people there have nasty things to say about them.

My advice, go to Reseller Ratings and look for the "best overall" button in the upper right hand corner. Only browse stores in the 9-10 range and you'll find what you need from a reputable dealer at a decent price.

I just got an Alienware (more a speciality boutique than a small shop) laptop delivered today and it whips the llama's ass (but is a bit expensive).
