Gift for dad

High-end thank you present for dad.

My dad is coming to visit on Friday. And he's been quiet amazing to me this past year. I want to get him a nice high end thank you present.

I thought of getting him an autographed Taschen book but there are none at my price range that he would appreciate.

Where can I go in NYC or online to buy something similar?

Thanks!

Bauman Rare Books is at 535 Madison, or you can order online, if you wanted to stick with the book theme. They have first editions and signed copies.

I had thought it might be nice if you got him a signed or first edition children's book that he used to read to you, but HOLY CRAP those books are expensive! I'll try to come up with something else.

For some nice art books, many in the $100 range, you could try Ursus Books.

Do you want to stick with books, or are you open to something else?
- actual framed photograph - I can post some ideas if you're interested
- art or sculpture
- nice plant / terrarium
- nice wine chiller and opener with a nice bottle
- can the two of you do something really amazing together in NYC? High end photography class, cooking class, flight, boat ride?

You can spend all that (and more, if you like) on a bottle of Scotch.

Lots of photography and affordable art here.

Art blog which lists up-and-coming and other affordable art.

Something from Trunkt - awesome art and design.

Another gallery: Hang.

Lots of ideas in this home/art/design blog roundup.

She also has a listing on Affordable Art and a Brooklyn Guide.

Other ideas around photography/design:
- his own Holga or Lomo camera and nice coffee table book and certificate to get prints
- really nice leather hand-bound journal (these can be uber-expensive) and nice ballpoint or fountain pen

- awesome set of kitchen knives and block
- awesome leatherman or other knife
- nice watch (either slightly fun or more traditional)
- cufflinks
- super nice tie

What immediately jumped to mind for me was two things

A nice watch with an engraving on the back. Watches can be a both high end and functional gift.

Another is a high end pair of shoes. I dont know what your father does but an expensive pair of shoes for men can be both extremely comfortable and look amazing. Instead of having to choose one or the other which is fairly normal with dress shoes.

Buy him a swank pen and use it to write a 10 page letter talking about how awesome he's been this year.

Are there any details (even just a few) that give insight as to who your dad is or what kinds of things he enjoys? I feel like I'd be able to chime in with a good idea given some background on the (obviously swell) type of guy he is.

A very fine pocketbook or wallet is always a nice gift for a man. Plenty of places in New York to get one -- try Barney's or something.

Tag Heuer watch. His friends will be uber-jealous and think he's the man.

Subscriptions or memberships that come with magazines in unusual organizations, or organizations of interest to him. American Scientist, for instance, is a great magazine. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society has its own mag.

A one-year wine club membership, one from a good vineyard that sends say 4-8 nice bottles a year.

I'm buying my brother-in-law a halliburton aluminum carry-on bag for his 40th. It's about $600 at ebags.com, and I know he'd love it since his own dad still uses an aluminum halliburton briefcase bought 30 or so years ago. They're indestructible and look fantastic for many years to come.
