Help me pick a new cell phone and carrier!

I'm looking to get a new cell phone and sign up for a new carrier, and I could use some advice.

First off, what service is generally regarded as the best in the bay area?
Second, what phone should I get? I currently have a hand-me-down, first-generation Blackberry, but I do NOT have a data plan because I don't think I need one. The functions I use most on the phone besides calling are texting and games, so a user-interface that is really friendly to those things is very important. I wouldn't mind having a camera, but it's not necessary.

Oh, and as for cost... not really a huge issue... I'd like to keep it around $300 dollars.

According to Consumer Reports in January 2007, Verizon is the best carrier for San Francisco (score of 67). Each of T-Mobile, Sprint, and Cingular were tied for second (score of 60).

As to phones, the ones CR recommended for Verizon at that time were:

• Samsung SCH-a930 , $50
• Motorola W315 , $30
• LG VX3450 , $20
• LG VX8300 , $50
• Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-V , $100

Since that was about 9 or 10 months ago now, the phones might have changed.
