open source alternatives

Does anyone know of a good open source alternative to Navicat for MySQL?

I've developed a web app with a fairly intense database behind it that several users need to sometimes create custom reports from.

Rather than waiting for me to code a report for them on request, they'd like to be able to create them on their own. So I'm looking for something similar to the visual query builder in Navicat.

Think easy to use, and would only be able to understand very basic SQL if necessary.

Thanks!

MySQL Administrator? It has a Query Browser.

Actually the MySQL Query Browser has a Query Browser ;-) (MySQL Admin just launches it, its a separate app)

The Workbench may do what you want but I'm not familiar with Navicat so I can't answer authoritatively and my experience with the workbench was at an extremely buggy state.

I still prefer Navicat, but years ago, I was using SQLYog, which practically has the same functions. I believe they still have a "community edition," which is free.

Does it have to be a desktop app? phpMyAdmin (or its equivalent for your platform) might suffice.

Also, Navicat looks like a good product, but am I the only person who is deterred by different OS pricing? As a Windows user, the Navicat pricing makes me feel like I'm subsidising OS/X and Linux users. Not to say that arguments couldn't be mounted to defend this strategy (e.g., perhaps the dev environment costs more for the Windows build etc), but I still find it niggling enough to probably not put my money down.

Response by poster: phpMyAdmin is great... thats what I use ;-)

Hoping to give the users who don't know SQL some sort of access though, and this sort of GUI looked promising...
