Identify this children's novel

Book identification: Children's book for teens set shortly after World War III, set at least partly in the Welsh valleys.

It involved a girl looking for her parents.

It was a text for my pre-GCSE studies at school around 20 years ago.

Probably Z for Zacahariah. The original novel was set in an American valley, but a BBC adaptation moved it to the Welsh valleys.

That would appear to be it. Many thanks. It must have been that we read the novel and were shown the play on video, so the setting got confused in my mind.

Quite a harrowing novel, if I recall.
