Where to go in Houston Texas?

Where in Houston, Texas would you take a visiting guest to show off this town’s uniqueness & have fun?

The guests are coming in from LA, Ca. and will be here September 14th & 15th. I’ve already researched sporting venues for the date.

Depends on what you want to do, but if there's someone playing at the Orange Show, that's always interesting. Also, the Art Car Museum, the CAM, the Chinese art show at MAFA. See if something is going on at Miller Outdoor Theater. Go gallery hopping. Take them to eat at any of several thousand fantastic family-owned restaurants. That would be a good time of year to take them to Galveston - even if they're from LA at least the water is warm enough to get in without a wetsuit here.

I find I often have to fight apologizing for Houston, like there's not interesting things to do here. There is, it's just such a drive to get anywhere it's easy to forget about it all.

Maybe a brief pass by the Book Stop, for novelty's sake.

The Heads of State semi-public art exhibit is fun and unusual.

The heads of state are indeed awesome. I also recommend the Orange Show, like pomegranate said. If they like modern art, the Menil gallery is great.

The Johnson Space Center and the touristy Space Center Houston next door.

Another way to kill a morning would be to park your car downtown (free on weekends) and hop the MetroRail going south. Ride it to the end and come back. You'll see downtown, mid town, the museum district, the medical center and then Reliant Stadium complex.

Lucy's going to be here by then.

Aurora Picture Show is wonderful. They have a wide range of programming. The Orange Show is great, as is the Beer Can House. Don't forget a boat tour of the Ship Channel.

I second votes for the Menil Collection (best art bookstore in the midwest) and Forbidden Gardens.

Don't forget food! Everyone eats out in Houston. A big favorite is Hugo's .
