Is my camera possessed?

Why is my digital camera shutting off my laptop?

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5900 that has stopped playing nice with computers. When I plug it in to my Dell Inspiron 9300 (running Windows XP) the computer immediately shuts off. This happens as soon as I plug the USB cable into the computer, regardless if the camera is on or not. I've tried a new cable the same thing happened. I also tried it on a Mac, just for fun and, while it did not shut off, the computer completely froze until I unplugged the camera. What gives?

It's probably drawing enough power to overload your battery. Try using a powered USB hub between the camera and the computer.

Maybe there is some kind of a short inside the camera? An USB memory card reader could take care of this problem.

I had my PC Shut off when I accidentally sent a current up the USB cable (9v, long story) - this may be your motherboard protecting itself.

I'd recommend the card reader route.
