Can I rely on a NYC taxi to transport my bicycle box?

Will a box of dimensions 8" x 29.5" x 53" fit in a standard New York yellow taxi? What about one of them minivan or SUV ones?

Probably. They're usually Crown Victorias, so you could try to find the dimensions of the trunk. The car-service Lincoln's are probably even wider.

That's a little wider and about as long and tall as the boxes my guitars used to be shipped to the UPS depot in. I would hail a cab to get them home and never had the least problem, they fit in the trunk with much room to spare.

It's only 8" thick, it'll fit on the floor in the rear seat easy. But it'll mean you'd have to ride in the front. Do they let you ride in the front in NYC? I've only ever seen it once on TV.

Yes, they do let you sit in the front seat in the cabs. I've only seen it done when there are 4 passengers to take though.

I've ridden (3 times now) in similar-looking cabs with divergent abilities to hold my bike box in the trunk. Regular Crown Victoria yellow cabs did a better job than local car service Lincoln Towncars. But in light of the above workarounds, in either case, yes, you can use taxis, and don't even need to hold out for a minivan.
