Working in Brooklyn

A friend of mine has received a job offer in the Flatbush Avenue/Brooklyn College area of Brooklyn -- the last stop on the #5 train. She knows nothing of this area, and wants to know if it's a safe area to work, and whether the commute back to Manhattan (often at night) will be a concern.

I can't speak to her safety concerns, because I don't live there. I live close, in Prospect Heights (near the Brooklyn Museum), and my area is great, but as I'm sure you know, a few blocks can make a big difference.

But I wanted to point out that the 5 train quits running to Brooklyn at night. It terminates at Bowling Green, in Manhattan. According to the MTA map, the 2 also goes to Flatbush/BC, and as a 2-rider, I can attest to the fact that it does run into Brooklyn at night (though it's frequently problematic on weekends). But your friend might want to take a close look at the 2 latenight schedule.

I worked in that area for a while. While it is not the safest area of Brooklyn, it is not not so bad that I would turn down a good job.

How far is the walk to the subway from the job site? Does the route to the subway go down quiet streets? If it is only a few blocks along a well travelled street, then she has nothing to worry about.

Agree with the others above me. Not the safest area of Brooklyn, but as long as it isn't a far walk from the job to the subway, it should be okay.

I live northwest of there, on Flatbush and Linden. It's a Caribbean ghetto, mostly Trini. If any crime happens, it's either gang-related or drug dealing--nothing your friend should worry about.

How long has he lived in NYC, and where? A New Yorker should be totally fine both at the site and commuting. I take the nighttime Q train in the middle of the night both ways quite frequently, it doesn't bother me and it's very quiet.

It's a pretty safe and busy area. I also take the Q frequently, sometimes late at night and it's always safe and populated.

She should just take the trip, walk around the area; I think she'll feel fine about the area. The main reason for her to investigate the trip is that it's a looooooong ride. Longer than it looks, especially if she's looking at the (not-to-scale) official MTA subway map.

If I were her I'd be unconcerned about the area but concerned about losing that much time twice a day to a commute (is she good at getting things done and/or relaxing on the subway?).

nasreddin: Manhattanites sometimes see the outer boroughs as a whole other world. The area being talked about is no worse than the area just north of Columbia, for a college-to-college comparison.
