Where can I buy live dungeness crab in San Francisco? The closer to Market and Castro street, the better.

Nowhere, right now. Season runs November through May.

I am nosy and would like to know, what is dungeness crab in San Francisco? Because here in the UK, it is merely brown crab that happens to be caught in the region of Dungeness. Quite why people seem so happy to buy something that's pulled out of the water right next to a nuclear power station I don't know, but apparently it's a marketing thing.

For when they are in season - the chowhound boards usually have good recommendations, such as Sun Fat on Mission St.

The aren't in season, and I don't know whether you even want them (since they aren't in season) but you can certainly get them as late as late June. Don't know about *now* though. Folk wisdom is that if the name of the month doesn't contain the letter "r" it's probably best to pass.
