Please help my fiancee find a movie

Please help my bride-to-be remember a movie from the 80's-90's. She enjoyed it on cable with a friend who is now a bridesmaid, and wants to try to get a copy for her as a gift. Description within...

It's an odd movie, kind of a drama/comedy. A woman travels to somewhere in the Bristish diaspara to visit a former (female) roomate. One of these characters may be played by Toni Collette, and one of the characters had terrible skin damage or burns or something. There are a lot of flashbacks. Generally, the movie seems to focus on their friendship (maybe one of them dies).

It sounds a little like Career Girls by Mike Leigh:

Female british flatmates reunite. Their old male friend is now crazy and homeless (don't remember if he is also physically scarred). It's an awesome and sad movie.

goddamn weird. I was just thinking of Ricky from Career Girls while driving home this evening, completely out of the blue. I thought about looking up the movie on Netflix.
