f.u. foomatic-RIP

How do I freaking install freaking foomatic-RIP on my freaking Mac (OS X 10.3.9)?
I've followed every set of instructions I can find online (all essentially saying to install foomatic-RIP, ESP Ghostscript, and foo2zjs packages, installing foo2zjs last). By all appearances I install the first two successfully, but whenever I try to make install foo2zjs (actually sudo make install) I get an error saying foomatic-RIP isn't installed. I am about to throw my printer (HP Laserjet 1018) under the wheels of a passing car. If you have any experience with foo2zjs and/or foomatic-RIP for Mac OS, please help before I flush $100 hard-earned dollars down the drain. My wallet thanks you!

Binary installers for everything (with full instructions). They all install fine for me (no make required)

Response by poster: Yeah, those are the files I've used, but for me they *don't* install correctly, and the error is that foomatic-rip isn't installed. I guess the problem is more with foomatic-rip than foo2zjs.
The foomatic-rip package contains a configure file, yes.
At this point however I've tried so many things I can't remember what I've tried and what I haven't. I was really hoping there would be someone out there... anyone... who knows anything about foomatic-rip and foo2zjs. I just can't understand why the installation would appear to go perfectly but foo2zjs says it didn't.

Response by poster: I have no idea what I did right, but it ended up installed. I just reinstalled everything I'd already installed, from the command line.
