Cost of moving to Australia

Has anyone here moved to Australia from New Zealand? We're in the process of getting quotes from moving companies and it would be great to get some recommendations (or warnings) from others who have done the same thing recently. Cheers :)

I've never been to either place, but where specifically are you moving from in NZ and moving to in Oz? That might help people with recommendations.

We moved from Auckland to Melbourne in 2005. I can't recall the shipping company we used (I'll find the receipt and post again) but the things I remember are:

1. It was heinously expensive

2. We left it till the last minute to get quotes and that was a very bad idea (you already seem to have this one under control)

3. We started packing stuff into boxes ourselves, not realising that the shipping company will do everything. So don't do that

Also, it took months for our stuff to arrive, partly because it wasn't a full container load. That actually suited us fine, as we had accommodation arranged for the first few months, but it's something you need to be aware of.

Response by poster: We're moving to Melbourne too, but from Christchurch. Nomis - it's interesting that you say it was expensive too - we've had people tell us that they've moved their stuff from the UK to NZ for about the same price!

The one company from which we've had a firm quote told us it would take about 8 weeks for our stuff to arrive - from door to door. They have quoted us NZ$2,200 - which does seem on the high side, but we have nothing to compare it to yet :)

Regarding the packing, I've heard from a couple of sources that it is harder (or perhaps just more expensive) to get insurance for stuff you pack yourself. So, at this stage at least, we're planning on letting the moving company pack everything for us too.
