VIRB is pretty cool. They're owned/run by purevolume, which is not as okay, but still okay.

and myspace, but now the only bands that get "featured" are ones that pay for that privilege, and that means ones that the label thinks may be able to parlay that into sales. that may not be bad, but i think it diminishes chances for fan driven growth.

I've discovered lots of great music via 3hive. There's a few other blogs out there that simply catalog smaller bands, up-and-coming artists, and the like -- i.e. TofuHut. Check the links section of 3hive.

I strongly second caddis' comment on Stereogum + the use of hype machine to find an mp3 blog suited to your tastes. I also add Tiny Mix Tapes as well as Music for Robots to the list of ones to check out.

seconding citron's suggestions along with the following (some of these might be a little electro-heavy for your tastes):

http://music.for-robots.com/
http://gorillavsbear.blogspot.com/
http://this.bigstereo.net/
http://theyellowstereo.com/
http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/
http://youaintnopicasso.com/
http://www.daytrotter.com/

One nice thing about music sites/blogs is that if you find one that you like they tend to link to others that are similar.

Just look at the highly rated bands on pitchforkmedia.com, then tell everyone you liked them before they sold out.

Lots of good suggestions above. If I had a band, I would probably try to get my music up on all the places above, but I would also post a video of your songs at Youtube, too, and some of the other video sites. You have to be really agressive these days to get heard.

The blogs are a good way to go, but you have to send them something, and hope you get noticed...We provided a fairly good overview at Beatking earlier in the year, on the best of them:

http://www.beatking.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19444

Hope this helps.
