Help me find housing in Rio de Janeiro!

I'm a student and will be staying in Rio de Janeiro for 1.5 months this summer and need to find an apartment! What are good ways to find a decent apartment (or room in a shared apartment) in Rio without being gouged?

I'll be staying for about 45 days and very flexible about location. All I need is a simple room. My only requirement is internet, as i need to do work while I'm there. I'm happy to not be in the Zona Sul (ipanema, copacabana, etc), and in fact would prefer somewhere interesting like Lapa or Santa Teresa. Do you have any tips on websites or bulletin boards to look at? Most leads I've found seem to be geared towards wealthy vacationers and charge a fortune. Obrigado!

I have used http://www.rioapartments.com/ and can vouch for their legitimacy. I used them for vacation, but I know they have long-term rentals available. If the prices do not suit you, I imagine they could put you in touch with someone who does.

I use vrbo.com they have pics and a clickable booking calendar. Also, there are listings on the craigslist Rio page.

Do you speak Portuguese? Considered getting on orkut and doing some networking?
