What's this thing called?

In my old office, we had a machine that would enlarge 8.5"x11" flyers into poster-sized prints. What's it called and where do I get one?

In the place I worked over two years ago, we had an all-in-one machine that would scan a 8.5"x11" piece of paper and print out a poster-sized version of it. It was great for, say, enlarging agendas for meetings so they could be pinned onto the wall.

Just a few more features: the ink and paper came in an all-in-one roll that you'd put into the machine (and it was a single color machine, one roll would only print in one color — red, green and blue are the ones I remember); you had the option of enlarging the text or image as is, or reversing the colors; it had a built in trimmer to cut off the finished product from the roll; and it would scan paper much like a fax-machine does (there was no copy surface).

My google skills have failed me — what is this thing? And where can I get one?

You just might be looking for a poster printer.

(I had access to one when I was teaching school and I remembered it was heat-activated. I googled "thermal poster maker".)

It is a "Large Format Printer" or "Plotter". We just bought one for my office, they are very pricy.

If you are looking to make a few copies, try Office Depot. They have a copier that will reproduce blueprint sized copies. The copies are about $1.00 each.

They're called Wide Format Printers, and are very expensive.

If you don't want to spend the money on one, you can always use Rastorbuster or blockposters.com and join together a bunch of 8 1/2 x 11" sheets.

seconding the plotter. Go to kinko's and you can use one for like $.75/sqft

his description sounds nothing like a large-format printer to me, except for the size of the output. I've never seen a "poster printer" as linked above, but it's definitely a closer match.
