Night out in Manhattan. Where to go?

I will be in New York on Tuesday and I'm looking for places to go/things to do/stuff to drink in the evening.

Good: low-key, quirky or downright weird.

Bad: sports bars, fakey Irish pubs, dress codes.

You'll get way more out of searching previous threads than you are likely to get here.

My two favorites: Peculier Pub and Rocky Sullivan's

The Peculier becomes an NYU hangout on the weekends, and admittedly I've only been a few times, but there's a world of beer to be had.

Rocky's is sort-of the anti-fake Irish Pub, there's a great jukebox - or at least an eclectic and fairly political jukebox. Good pints, usually interesting people to talk to. No food, it's definitely for drinking, debating, and generally being convivial.

Decibel Sake Bar always satisfies the "quirky" requirement for visitors. Totally underground, dark, weird, reasonably priced, and (generally) a bizarre mix of seriously drunk Europeans, hipsters and smooth-looking Asian NYU kids.

What part of Manhattan? What's your budget? The previous threads will be useful, but you'll get a lot better answers with more specifics.

If money's no object, go to the Campbell Apartment in Grand Central Terminal. That's one of those things, like Decibel ,that you just can't do anywhere else in America.

Best answer: Vole De Nuit

My wife and I set aside an afternoon to go there every time we visit the city.

Belgian Beer Garden downtown around 4th street. (was already buzzed when I went there can't remember much but I really want to go again)
Really cool place. Just walk around East Village and you will find lots of cool bars.
Also, for even more relaxing atmosphere, try Williamsburg.

Seconding Belgian Beer Garden at 4th street, off 6th avenue -- but note that there's no real signage to speak of, just an open courtyard-type entrance. Also, the fries are fantastic.

Also seconding Peculier Pub.

If lots of beers are your thing but you're in midtown, House of Brews might be worth a try, but it's verging on sports bar.

On the lower key side, Vbar is nice and quiet, a good meeting place. I also like

Do you know what neighborhood you'll be in?

Gah... I also like the Bourgeois Pig, which has two locations. This is the one I've been to. And if you're looking for something slightly more swanky (but still no dress code), the Washington Square Hotel has a nice little bar, called the North Square Lounge.

Response by poster: Sorry to be so general with the request. Specific neighborhood is not as much of a question as we'll likely be cabbing. We'll probably stay on Manhattan however.

Less pricey is preferable, but this is by no means budget travel. Places where you might not need a reservation are helpful, as our plans are kind of in the air right now.

There's a cool place called...The Back Room? That's super hidden, and they serve drinks in tea cups. It's on the LES. Not super helpful since I am not sure of the name, but I will investigate. Seems to fill the quirky requirement.
