What's wrong with the colour picker?

When I use the magnifying glass in the Mac OS X colour picker, I get a colour value darker than what I clicked on. Why?

Info: Mac OS X 10.4.x, any application that uses the Mac OS X picker (for example, Photoshop with "Apple" set for the picker or Pixen)

FWIW, the picker panel appears to forget what profile I set in this menu, which appears to be related to the issue.
