How to use Outlook Deleted Items folder with imap?

Why can't I make Outlook 2003 for Windows (or 2007, if this is doable) store deleted IMAP items in the actual Deleted Items folder instead of forcing me to either show them with a strikethrough, or hide them from view until purging?

I know this is how Exchange does it.

Outlook's IMAP support has traditionally been crippled in order to encourage adoption of exchange server. I suspect that is why they handle deleted items so poorly.

Maybe in Office 2007 they realized that actively working against the customer's interests in order extract more license fees from them will cost them customers in the long run, but I doubt it.
