Help us walk Fraser Island!

FraserIslandFilter: We'd like to do the Great Walk on Fraser Island, Australia next month. But we're having trouble figuring out logistics....

My boyfriend and I will be coming from Boston to attend a conference in Brisbane this July, and we'll have a week ahead of time. We'd like to go backpacking (er, "walking") during this time, and Fraser Island seems really neat. Our guidebook recommends a 5-day walk from Dilli Village to Happy Valley. A few questions:

Would you recommend renting a car from Brisbane or taking the bus/train? The public transportation schedules I'm seeing online seem rather sporatic, but perhaps doable.

How does one typically get to the trailhead and back from the end? The ferries don't seem to drop off anywhere close. My guide book mentions the Fraser Island Taxi Service. Is this our only choice short of renting a vehicle, or am I missing something here?

Any other tips? We're experienced backpackers, but have never been to Australia before.

Or -- should we skip Fraser Island entirely and do Your Favorite Thing Near Brisbane?

Thanks for your help!

Fraser Island is pretty cool, but from what I remember it didn't really have much more than the rainforest you would otherwise see on the mainland. That said, it is a pristine peaceful place.

If you can fit it in easily then do it. But if it is a complicated ordeal, then the nearby rainforests such as Cooloola and
Coloured Sands National Park are just as good.

Though it has been a good 10-15 years since I have been up there!

Not sure if I have helped :)
