Hotel in Asheville NC?

Good hotel recommendations in Asheville NC? A friend and I will be in Asheville for one night, and would like to stay within walking distance of stuff....

"Stuff" being defined as: a place to walk for dinner, maybe drinks afterwards, an independent coffeeshop in the morning, and other potentially cool things we could find just walking around. Basically we want to be in the ideal location to experience Asheville in only about 24 hours.

I've read a couple past threads about what to do once there, but nothing about where to stay. We probably don't want to do a hostel, but might if it has nice (clean!) private rooms and a good location. I'm thinking a realistic budget is under $150? We'll be there the night of July 4, if that matters. Thanks for any suggestions!

You'll want to be downtown, and unfortunately there aren't a whole of hotels downtown. Here's a google map that shows the only ones I can even think of. The Haywood Park Hotel and the Renaissance are both a little pricier than you might want although the Ren is quoting $190 for that night. And the Days Inn is kinda sketchy last time I checked, but it might not be anymore. These are all in the thick of downtown and within walking distance to all that you listed. Good luck.

I was looking into the same thing a few weeks ago - while we ended up staying in Black Mountain at The Inn Around the Corner, we had friends who successfully bid on the Renaissance on Priceline for around $70.

I love love LOVE the Princess Anne Hotel but it is not within walking distance to a bunch of stuff- though the drive into downtown is only about 5 min. It is a gorgeous hotel built in what was once a victorian-style home, I think. The beds are super comfortable and the free breakfast in the morning is delicious. Give it some thought, especially if you have a car, since parking in the city of Asheville is so much less hassle than in other major cities (there's that one indoor garage that charges something like 50 cents an hour...?)

Haywood Park is the most central. (It was an Ivey's department store when I was a kid.) There's some construction next door, currently, but it's close to Jack of the Wood, three or four art places, all the restaurants, Grove Arcade, Malaprops bookstore, coffee and dessert shops, etc. It's worth a premium. Have fun!
