Matching Designers & Non-profits
June 13, 2007 9:10 AM

I'm helping a long-time friend who has recently taken the helm at a small non-profit and needs some web design work done. I've come across a number of web sites that connect designers with non-profits over the last few years... but can only remember Guru.com. I'd like to recommend a service to her, but I'm coming-up short. Does anyone here have experience with a firm like/better than Guru? Guru may end-up being our final choice, but I can't imagine they're the only players in the field.

This is not exactly what you are asking for, but the Taproot Foundation can do this. She can apply for a grant of 'professional services' from Taproot, specifically in the form of either a Basic or Advanced Website. Unfortunately they only serve clients in a few cities.

silusGROK - While this isn't exactly what you are looking for, the firm I work for specializes in design for the non-profit industry, and we do lots of web work for small non-profits. My email is in my profile if you want to chat.

Hehe... nicely put, SpecialK.

And while I think that Mefi Jobs are the bomb, I don't want to have to fly interference between applicants and my friend (who isn't a Mefite).

We've just recently relaunched the site for Design 21: Social Design Network, which exists for exactly this purpose:

"DESIGN 21: Social Design Network’s mission is to inspire social consciousness through design. We connect people who want to explore ways that design can positively impact our communities – ways that are thoughtful, informed, creative and responsible."

Check if there isn't an NPower in your friends area. Also consider posting on Idealist.org or even Craigslist and LinkedIn. Volunteermatch is good. Finally, check with the local Nonprofit Center, often at a local college, who has a list of community resources.

Coroflot isn't non-profit-centric, but it's got lots of portfolios from interaction designers looking for work.
