Summary of student finance in UK

Please summarise the financial aid available to students from low income households in the UK

I'm thinking of going to university either this year or next. I've had a quick look at the government's student finance website and I'm slightly confused.

I'd like to hear from someone who has already applied for student finance for the '06 / '07 academic year. If you've already completed an application, please summarise the main points of the system (e.g. how much is available in total from loans, how much from grants, etc.)

You might want to phrase your question as a question, so it sounds less like an assignment, you'll get better responses that way.
