Fun in F-burg?

Is there anything fun to do/see in Fredericksburg, VA on a Friday evening?

I'm meeting a friend for dinner in Fredericksburg tomorrow. We'll probably eat somewhere downtown (restaurant recommendations would be great!) , but we're not sure what we should do afterwards. Is there anything in the area worth seeing after 7 PM? Historical sites, parks, shopping areas, movie theaters?

Sammy T's on Caroline is probably my favorite downtown restaurant.

Carl's on Princess Anne is consistently ranked as some of the best ice cream in the country and is open until 11:30 tomorrow. Definitely grab a cone if you get a chance.

You might get some ideas for activities from the Free Lance-Star's events page.

If you go to Carl's on Friday night plan on 20-30 minutes in line. Not that it isn't worth it. Standing in line outside at Carl's is half the fun. I've stood in a 20 minute line in the snow at Carl's to fill my custard fix. (Technically, Carl's sells custard, not ice cream).

Downtown, except for the bars and restaurants, pretty much shuts down early. Likewise, the historical sites, of which there are plenty, will also be closed by 7 PM. If you opt for the movies, go to the Southpoint theaters and not the Regal at Central Park. Southpoint is much nicer and the sound system is better too.

I second the recommendation on Sammy T's.

I was in Fredericksburg last year on a Sunday night and there was a casual restaurant with a large deck right on the riverfront. (Maybe adjacent to the train station?). There was a roots/hippie/funk band playing and lots of twentysomethings hanging out on the deck. I couldn't stay, but maybe some Fredericksburgians can give you the name of this place?

Thirding Carl's.

The fact that three of four people commenting mention an ice cream shack as "a fun thing to do" might help you adjust your expectations.

If you're into Civil War history, you could visit the location of the Battle of Marye's Heights. I have no idea if Civil War stuff is interesting to you. It was one of the core battles of the film Gods and Generals.
