Visit L.A. on memorial weekend?

A few friends are coming to visit me in San Diego next week. We want to spend a few days in L.A. walking around, seeing the sites, and going to the getty. Is it a bad idea to go this Sunday and Monday on memorial weekend? I'm worried that the crowds will be larger than normal and some of the stuff will be closed down. We could definitely post-pone it till later in the week. Please let me know what you L.A. folk think, thanks!

You don't want to go to the beach on Memorial Day, that's for sure.

Best answer: Try to postpone the touristy stuff this weekend, doing it during the week is a much better idea. Just make sure everything is open - if memory serves, the Getty may be closed on Mondays.
Make sure to check times for everything and make reservations for anything requiring them, don't forget to use your AAA or other discounts etc..I'm sure you know the drill...

The drive up on Sunday will probably be okay, but the traffic on the way back to SD will likely be murder on Monday night.

Best answer: if you can comfortably do it later during the week, that's your best choice.

thanksgiving and christmas are usually awesome times to be in los angeles because so many people are gone, but memorial day weekend can be unpredictable.

Best answer: It's a "grey May" here right now. The weather is gloom to the max and NPR this morning said it was going to stay this way through the weekend. Bah. (Note that after "grey May" comes the "June glooms" and then "a fry July".)

I agree w/ puritycontrol that you're going to become homicidal trying to drive back to SD Mon night. The traffic will be deadly.

If you still want to come, we always try to take out-of-town friends to brunch at the Ivy on Robertson (not the one on the beach!), a walk down Melrose, dinner at Mr. Chow, a drive on Mulholland, and a stroll down the Santa Monica Promenade. YMMV.
