How to get the Guitar Hero II controller for Xbox 360 to work with Windows XP & Frets on Fire?

I've read on several websites that the Guitar Hero controller for Xbox 360 works with Frets on Fire in Windows. Some places say it 'just works when you plug it in', others say to download the Microsoft driver for it. Neither worked for me -- when I plug the guitar in to the USB port, it recognizes it as a new device but FOF doesn't recognize button presses when I try to configure it in setup. Tried installing the Microsoft driver (I'm on XP/SP2) and it fails every time with 'failed to install'. If I have it search for a driver online it finds nothing. Help, I need to rock!!!

Which microsoft driver are you using?

This is the one that worked for my GH controller on XP SP2.
