Last Sunday, the Dodgers pulled out a win against the Padres in a game that took 17 innings to finish. I remember hearing that, a couple of years ago, MLB changed the rules so that you couldn't buy alcohol after the seventh inning, perhaps to curb drunk driving. This particular game emptied out both bullpens and last 4 hours, 55 minutes. Can a brother a get a drink in extra innings?

Best answer: A co-worker who was there and sat through the whole boring event said that no, she could not buy a beer after the 7th.

I can't speak for the Dodgers, but I know at Yankee Stadium, the beer vendors pack up and shut down after the 7th inning. I doubt they'd call them back just to serve some beer, even if there was a rule permitting drinks in extra innings.

The rule is no more alcohol gets sold after the 7th inning. This is often the law, rather than general policy.

Yeah, I'm thinkin' no. You can only buy 2 beers at a time so unless you got a bunch of people to help you stock up with a surplus of warm beers to last for the duration, you'd probably have to settle for root beer with your Dodger dog.

Just because a game goes 17 innings doesn't mean everyone knows it's going to go 17 innings. At no point in extra innings could you serve beer without the knowledge that the game could be over in one inning. (And with the money you save you can buy a six pack of the good stuff when the game lets out.)

That said, it seems only decent to pass out coupons for a free future beer somewhere around the 15th.

At Fenway, which ends beer sales after the 7th and forbids the sale of beer anywhere out in the seats (so no roaming beer man or woman, just a slog through an endless line in the concourse), when we needed a late game pick-me-up we'd head to the inside-the-park bar under the left field grandstand that would serve through and beyond the end of the game. You couldn't take the beer back to your seat, but there were some nice big-screen TVs. The longest game I've attended went 16 innings, but it was gripping enough that I didn't want to leave my seat, so I'm not sure if it was open for the duration.

Can't say I've specifically noticed a similar setup at the half dozen or so major league parks I've been to, but there must be several with a comparable setup.

Response by poster: Good answer! Maybe we should switch gears into creative ways to bring alcohol into a stadium without getting busted?

Best answer: there is always the beer belly

Bring a woman with a shoulder/messenger bag. As long as the bag has some sort of flat inner pocket that camoflauges with the inside or flat outer pocket that sits on the side near her body, you can hide a flask or two in there. The secuirty people just poke around in the main compartment(s) of any bag or purse you bring into the park. This works for movie theatres, theme parks, concerts, and other sports venues too. Then you just need a coke to chase with. Drink discretely. Not like I've ever tried it or anything...

I was at a Nationals game last year that went extra innings and had two long rain delays, and, nope, no beer after the 7th.

At Turner Field, you can go to the Chophouse (bar in left field) after the 7th to get beer. However, you have to stay in the bar to drink it, which isn't terrible since you still have a decent view of most of the field.
