MobileFilter: Hi, I would like to find a list of devices (Cell phone handsets) that support JSR-179 (J2ME Location API).

Apparently a prerequisite for this is having CLDC 1.1. My RAZR V3 only comes with 1.0, which does not support floating point numbers and therefore cannot use the location information for this API. Additionally if anyone knows if I am able to update the CLDC on my RAZR to 1.1, that would be incredibly useful to me. I'm trying to create a simple Location Based Service in J2ME, and running into brick walls at every turn. My RAZR is unlocked and I have access to install pretty much anything on it if it will help.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

The closest you'll find to a definitive answer is probably to dig through WURFL. However WURFL has a lot of devices, and if you're in the US I understand your choice is pretty much constrained to those handsets your carrier approves[?], so it may be easier to find a current list of carrier-supported phones and go through that.

Your best bet is to take a look at the WURFL, which is an XML file detailing the capabilities of different handsets and mobile devices.

On first glance, there seems to be a capability tag named j2me_loctapi which is probably what you're looking for.

Some handsets seem to support this capability while only having CLDC 1.0, so I'm not sure 1.1 is a requirement.

Anyway, here's the list I gathered up from the WURFL:

Nokia 3250
Nokia E60
Nokia E61
Nokia E70
Nokia N71
Nokia N72
Nokia N73
Nokia N80
Nokia N92
Siemens CF75
Siemens C72
Motorola i730
Motorola i830

you won't be able to update the CLDC. there are numerous sites for modding the RAZR (and it's moto relatives), but i don't think that you'll find a way to update the CLDC without flashing the whole phone.

i would recommend one of the N-series nokias. they're great handsets and they also pack great KVMs.

another thing to remember is that JSR179 (and also QJAE, the older Qualcomm technology for CDMA) will require you to have a signed application in order to utilize them.

Note that there are people who go ahead and reflash the whole phone with firmware from a later model. It seems like a pretty dodgy process, though.

Also note that different RAZRs have different capabilities. My V3i has JSR-82, for example, which the plain old V3 doesn't. I think it's just a monotonic increase — they add more stuff, it shows up in later models.
