Question: Every time I blockquote, my text shifts offscreen (in IE only).

In Internet Explorer, my blog seems to be disappearing to the left. I'm fairly certain that it has something to do with my alteration to the original template's blockquote style.

However, I do not see this behavior in Firefox for Windows or Firefox for the Mac, making me thinking this is an IE for Windows styling problem. However, my knowledge of HTML and CSS is Frankenstein-ian; I know how to splice stuff together until it achieves the effect I want, but I always don't have a grasp of the underlying base essentials.

Can someone advise me how I can hack what needs to be hacked so it still looks as I desire in Firefox Win/Mac but doesn't do what it's doing in IE? (I'm looking at it in IE6.) Relevant links are main page of blog, WordPress template stylesheet (look for the "#wp-content-pri blockquote" section), and a "IE CSS" template.

(I'm using this theme, if you'd like to look at the raw CSS that comes with the package.)

Wish I had a million questions this week, 'cause I had a really good other one. But that'll have to wait. :)

I just tried it in IE6 and IE7 under Parallels and didn't see any "disappearing" in either. Do you have a screenshot? What version of IE are you seeing it in?

IE7 on vista looks fine.

You might want to check out browsershots.org ; they take screencaps across all sorts of browsers and operating systems and let you check them out later.

(also, there's an alternate take on Walter Murphy's travails at http://volokh.com/posts/chain_1176093702.shtml ... )

I.E. 6, but it doesn't start at the top. It starts to creep off to the left below the box. You'd have to scroll down to see it.

Comforting. But, just to iterate: I'm on XP, MSIE sez its version number is 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.

Paging down to "Links for 2007-04-10," you begin to see it; part of the letters on the left edge of the blog post are missing. That's beneath the first blockquote.

Then, two posts down, just below the 'civility' blog post that has two blockquotes, there's "Links for 2007-04-09," where because of those two blockquotes it's a bit worse: the "L" in "Links" is completely gone, as is part of the "i."

If this is just a quirk of my employer's Internet access, I can live with that. But is anyone else seeing what I'm talking about?

Yes I see the problem on IE6 on Windows too. Fine on FF and Navigator.

I'm like you, just hack things together till they work. So you would probably be better off taking anyone else's advice. But I don't see any activity here so you could try a long shot. Add this to your blockquote css:

border-bottom: 6px solid #ccc;

See if that does anything. Not likely - I'm really just chiming in to confirm that other people can see the issue. Good luck.

Lockedroomguy, thanks for the confirmation. I made the change; any effect?

Also, anyone else see it and/or have advice?

It looks fine now for me in IE6, same computer/browser I viewed from earlier. How about for you, WCMike?

I'm at home now and don't have access to IE6Win. But I shall take a look tomorrow. Glad to hear it's looking good on your end, though: that's a good sign.

Lockedroomguy, it does indeed solve the problem with IE6Win. Thanks very much!
