We are currently in Florence and have 15kg of luggage that we dont want to carry when we are visiting sicily for the next 2 weeks. We are going to ask the hotel to look after it but if they say no, what is the best option for medium term luggage storage in Florence? we are going to Rome prior to sicily if that opens up any options.

Hmm. How are you traveling - via air or via train? I don't know if "security" restrictions are phasing these out in Italy like they are in the US, but have you thought about using a large locker? I know bus stations have them over here, and I have some weird memory of seeing them in lots of movies where the characters are in Europe and taking trains. They're often used for less than legal purposes - but it sounds like the perfect solution for you, save the hotel looking after it. As long as you pick one that's in a well-lit area with good foot-traffic, you'd be pretty safe just doing that, I'd imagine.

I did this while staying at a hostel in NYC - cost me about $4.00 for a day, but even if it's $50, that's cheaper than trying to find another option like...I dunno, a storage unit?

If it is stuff you don't need can you just mail it back home, or to someone that will look after it for you?

You don't want to mail stuff from Florence. Just trust me on that.

There is a Mail Boxes Etc. on Via Della Scala (13r) near the Church of Santa Maria Novella that I'm pretty sure stores luggage. They ship too, but they are very expensive. Whatever you do, don't try to ship stuff from the post office.

According to About.com's GoEurope, Florence's main train station (Stazione Santa Maria Novella Firenze) has a "left luggage" service on the ground floor -- 3 euros for the first 12 hours, 2 euros for every 12 hours after that. I've not tried this particular one, but various others I've used in Europe have been great. The more updated ones will pass your luggage through machines similar to airport scanners.

i've used it. it was great for short term, cost might be prohibitive for medium/long term.
