Who said, "Marriage is a constant crisis, and that's precisely why it works," or somesuch?

In this biweekly installment of Help es_de_bah Recall Something he Read on Mefi Before the Advent of the 'Favorites' Button:

Anybody remember a post about a late, obscure political/social pundit who said the above phrase? I want to place him around the time of Twain, but my memory can't be relied upon. As I recall, he was generally Christian and conservative, but with a healthy dose of centralist cynicism and a Twain-esque dry humor about him. The post included a list of quotes, but google hasn't turned up anything matching "marriage is a constant crisis," so I'm probably a bit off in my wording.

A little help, oh great collective self-conscious?

Best answer: I don't recognize the quote, but the author you describe sounds like Chesterton.

Best answer: Is it "The whole pleasure of marriage is that it is a perpetual crisis"? That's Chesterton.

Yeah, Chesterton. Who, incidentally, married a woman named Frances Blogg.
