Question: ObscureFilmFilter

Trying to find a film I only read about almost ten years ago

It was (I believe) either French or Spanish. It was about a journey through outer space. The journey was actually conducted in a car traveling across the remote countryside.

I've pored through every book on film I had at the time, and many others. At the time I was too busy with school and though, well someday I'll have to find that and rent it. And then for a long time I forgot all about it. Now, I want to see this film, at long last. Help.

Certainly not Solaris; for one thing, it's neither French nor Spanish, and for another, there's no journey through outer space conducted in a car traveling across the remote countryside. I second Alphaville, though I haven't seen it in a while so I can't be sure it fits.

Y'all are right. I was kind of conflating space travel with the long driving scenes.

As you were.

Sounds like it also could be The American Astronaut

I don't think it could be The American Astronaut, though it does sort of fit the description. It didn't have it's premiere until 2001, and wouldn't have made a book on film until a few years after at least I would think.

Try looking using the IMDB power search form. It lets you stipulate the language the film is in, a range of years when it might have been produced, and search for words from the plot summary, or keywords. Try several searches since the plot summaries and keywords are user-contributed so they can be a bit spotty.

If it turns out that no one here can help out, which seems most unlikely, you can always turn to the Internet Movie Critic's Find That Film! page. You just pose your question and let random netizens figure out your mystery movie. I've provided a few answers myself.
