Question: Nonprofit salaries

Is there a way to find exact salary information for jobs at a nonprofit?

I've tried googling variations on annual report or organiztion's name and salaries. I've noticed most nonprofits don't post a range in their ads and I'd like to know this before applying. I've only noticed salary info making news when there's a scandal.

I know salaries are public info when it comes to government jobs. Wish this weren't so top secret. Thanks.

IRS 990s list the top five salaries. You can try GuideStar.

Would it be worth contacting the nonprofit and saying, "look, I don't mean to jump the gun here, but before I apply I need to know the upper and lower limits for the starting salary. I'm asking this because if it's below a particular level, with my current living expenses, I could not afford to take a job which pays less than a certain amount per month. So in order to avoid wasting your time and mine, it would be useful to have some guidance on what the likely remuneration for this job will be so I know whether or not to apply at this stage."

In that way, you've put your cards on the table, they'll be aware that you are upfront and direct. Employers don't like people who play games, I find.

There are salary surveys available. Might not have info for the specific org & position you're looking at (assuming the position isn't on the 990), but you should be able to extrapolate.

The search term "nonprofit salary survey" will yield lots of results for general guidance. As noted they are only required to report the top salaries. As a person who has worked for several nonprofits I'll note that to me the salaries seem more variable than in general business - some operations are just strapped for cash and they pay accordingly. Nonprofits consistently (but not absolutely uniformly) pay less than their for-profit counterparts, so you really need non-profit specific data for comparison.
