Band Names Which Are Complete Sentences
March 14, 2007 8:06 AM   Subscribe

I'm looking for band names which are complete sentences.

Here are three examples:

They Might Be Giants
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness
...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

If you can provide proof that you didn't make the name up, that'd be great too.

A while ago, The Onion A/V Club posted their list of the Worst Band Names of '06. Quite a few of them are complete sentences, and most are jaw-droppingly, gut-bustingly funny anyhow. Examples:

Arsonists Get All the Girls
Here Comes Old Vodka Tits
You Ruined Christmas
Get Three Coffins Ready
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
posted by ScarletSpectrum at 8:24 AM on March 14, 2007

Everything But the Girl is a fragment not a complete sentence. Everything Butt the Girl would be a great imperative though.

And, technically, Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails are complete sentences.

Best answer: 1) I <3 lord kinbote! :-*br>
2) If my 7th grade grammar lobe recalls correctly, unless it's a command or an exclamation (and 'Fuck' works for both of these), a sentence needs a verb.

3) Hey, That's My Bike

And, technically, Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails are complete sentences.

wtf? "Jane is addiction"? I don't think so. The only way I could buy Nine Inch Nails is if "Nine Inch" is some guy's name and Nails is a verb lacking a direct object (i.e. fragment).

Seconding iconomy, just because a name is long and grammatically fluid does not make it a complete sentence.

Not sentences: Everything But The Girl, The International Noise Conspiracy, 65 Days Of Static, Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Orchestral Maneuvers In the Dark, My Glass Beside Yours, Jane's Addiction, Nine Inch Nails,
Explosions in the Sky, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, Madness, Captured by Robots, Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel, Men without Hats, A Flock of Seagulls, Men at Work, Nightmare of You, Ten Years After (and to be picky ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead)

Damn, people, don't make me keep adding to the list every time I preview. SUBJECT + VERB! (Which would be a hilariously awful band name)

Bands not yet mentioned:
Wir Sind Helden (German for "We Are Heroes")
Chin Up Chin Up (when taken as an imperative, though missing punctuation)
Page France (perhaps unintentionally)

And more here from a bored wikipedian. (Helpfully categorized for the grammatically disinclined)

2) If my 7th grade grammar lobe recalls correctly, unless it's a command or an exclamation (and 'Fuck' works for both of these), a sentence needs a verb.

Even a command needs a verb. You may be thinking of the fact that a command does not need a subject. (Or, as some grammarians put it, an unwritten "you" can be the subject of a command.)

Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid

First, I think you've got the two Ms backward - Kein Mitlied für die Mehrheit. Second, not a complete sentence: "No compassion for the majority." (You know, just in case kyleg needed to add foreign-language examples to his "not a complete sentence" list.)

I scanned my iTunes in reverse alphabetical order:

We are the fury.
Venice is sinking.
Turn me on, dead man.
This will destroy you.
Spank rock.
Snakes say Hissss!
Saturday looks good to me.
Praise the twilight sparrow.
Kid rock.
I'm from Barcelona.
I can lick any sonofabitch in the house.
Get cape. Wear cape. Fly.
Don't die Cindy.
Die! Die! Die!
Cut off your hands.
The 7-10 splits.

Too many imperatives, I realise. About half of them appeared in my iTunes with the recent SXSW torrent, which possibly points to the fashionability of such goofy names with small US indie bands.
