"Headset Friendly" Corded Desk Phone?

I'm looking for a good "headset friendly" corded desk phone -- one with a "line release" button or other "avoid handset lifter" type of feature.

I'm on the phone a lot when I'm working, but I'm picky about sound quality, and need to have my hands free to type. I use a GN Netcom headset with a separate amp that plugs into a modular handset cord.

For years I've used a Siemens "Gigaset" desk phone, mostly because it has a "line release" button. I can leave the handset unplugged, pick up the call by hitting the button for the line that's ringing (it's a two line phone), and hang up the phone by hitting the line release button. This saves me from hassling with whether the handset is on or off-hook, a big deal since I essentially use the phone exclusively with a headset.

Unfortunately, the Gigaset is dying -- the caller ID display hasn't worked in years, and now the buttons are starting to fail.

The line release feature doesn't seem to be easily searchable -- my searches pick up cellular headsets, or phones designed to plug a celluler-type headset into, instead of a "business style" amplified headset.

Outside of "headset friendly", I'm not terribly picky about features -- it'd be nice if it had two lines, a caller ID display and a speakerphone, but none of those are much of a deal-breaker feature wise.

Thanks for any recommendations!

I don't think it's exactly what you are looking for, but most current cordless phones have a head set jack. You could leave it on the charger and use the 'connect' button as your on/off hook.

A quick experiment of the ones we have in the office indicated that the Siemens model allows you to leave it on the charger and use the headset, whereas the VTech one does not.

It wouldn't be perfect, but it does have the features you are looking for and it would also give you the ability to get up and move around if you needed to.

Try doing a google search "Corded headset telephone". I was in the market for just the headset. One site had several cordless headsets, they looked nice, but a little pricy for me.

If you call Plantronics and tell them what you want, they'll tell you if they make one. I'd ask about headset systems or telephone systems. They might have something that would do everything you want it to do. They are pricey, but it's money well spent compared to cheap gear that you'll have to replace often.

Response by poster: Thanks everybody...

The cordless headset telephone idea wasn't quite what I was looking for, but it did eventually lead me to the Nortel Meridian 9417cw, which is pretty much on the money for what I'm after, so thanks again!
