Where can I find information on recruiting firms? I have my resume on monster and got an email from "Management Recruiters of Chicago -Far West" (which is an independantly owned franchise of MRI Networks (http://www.mrinetwork.com/). I'd like to see how reputable they are but can't find any information. Thanks!

I think the way they work is that the recruiters are independent, but somehow affiliated with MRI Networks (on preview - franchises), so it probably varies widely based on the recruiter. I do know that the recruiter I used in Chicago a few years ago was similarly associated with another network of recruiters (I forget which one though).

MRI works on a contingency basis. If you are not familiar with retained vs contingency search firms, some good info is here (pdf).

I have not worked directly with any of the MRI Network offices, but have looked at some of the positions they list. These appear to be non-exclusive listings. It can disadvantage you to work through a contingency recruiter if the employer is also posting/advertising the position to the public, because they would have to pay the recruiter in addition to your salary, making you more expensive to hire than candidates who apply directly to the employer. But if the recruiter lists a job that you want, which you can't otherwise find; or if it is a hard-to-fill position, the contingency approach may work just fine.
