Mac version of Insert?

Mac Word Filter: Help me turn off the Mac version of the Insert button.
Every now and again, I hit something by accident that makes typing overwrite whatever is in front of my cursor, just like I've hit the Insert button on a PC. (I use a Mac.) The only way I can figure out how to turn it off is to reboot. What key or key combo should I be hitting to go back to normal so when I type, whatever's in front of my cursor gets pushed to the right to make room for the new characters?

Response by poster: Oh, brilliant! I knew it had to be something simple. Thanks so much.
