What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve ever got, that you could actually use in your every day life?

There are a lot of smart people here, on this site, some or most of whom are much more experienced than I am in the ways of the world, and I’d just like to know what and how you’ve got to the places in your lives where you are now. What were the bedrocks of your beliefs that you lived by/are living by/or would wish to live by? I hope this question isn’t too open-ended, but it’s meant to gauge the means used by Metafilter users to live a more fulfilling and healthy life, so that I can hopefully glean something from them.

PS. Were there any compromises that you had to make along the way (of course there were), and what were they? Did they trouble you greatly, or have you been able to make peace with them? These are questions which often whirl around in my head, and I just wanted to voice them here in the hope that I might get some answers.

Thanks in advance!

This post was deleted for the following reason: this question is too open ended.

I was advised not to post chatty, open-ended questions to Ask MetaFilter.
