Whose permission do I need: The remixer or the original artist?

mc DJ did a killer remix of Sufjan Stevens "Illinois". I want to use a track from the remix on a podcast, but I don't know who to speak with regarding rights.

I haven't found any mention on mc DJ's site if he was granted official permission to remix and distribute "Illin-noise!". Do I need to get permission from him to use the track, or do I need to contact Sufjan's people?

Contact Sufjan's first for two reasons— First, they should be able to put you in touch with MC DJ if it was legit. Second, the underlying mechanical and songwriting rights are still Stevens', so you'll need to talk with his people anyway.
