TVFilter: I've got a newish Magnavox TV (model # 27MT3305/17) that has decided, whenever it turns on after being off for a few hours, that it's going to be on closed captioning (CC1). Obviously, I can just turn it off with the remote, but does anyone know how to stop making it the default setting?

Try unplugging it for about two hours and then plugging it back in - sometimes that resets the factory defaults.

As a corollary to iconomy's advice, look thru the onscreen menus to see if there is an option to reset the tv to factory defaults.

mmascolino, there doesn't appear to be, as I've found out through painstaking study of the onscreen menus. I will try the "unplug it" fix; I don't even set the clock on the thing so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

conversely if you are using a power strip or if the TV is attached to a cable box power outlet the TV may be losing its settings when you power down. Maybe CC on is the default...

Good news: The manual for your TV can be found here.
Bad news: It's not helpful. Maybe try setting it to "CC Mute" instead of "CC Off" and see if that sticks? Does this problem occur if you turn the TV off and turn it back on after a few seconds, or only after a few hours? Because if it's only after a few hours, that's just weird.

designbot, only after a few hours...and you're right, it IS weird. In my search for an answer, I've come across several people with different problems that can only be described as weird.

This happens to my Magnavox too. Not sure which model but I've had it for about 2-3 years. It only recently started reverting to the CC, though.
