My roommate's brother lives there, and she went out to visit him last year. I'll ask her this afternoon and post some of her suggestions later!

I used to live there but it's been quite awhile and I understand things have changed quite a bit. The sand dunes south of town are worth a seeing as they are quite impressive. You should visit some of the souqs (markets) for the experience, if for nothing else. The corniche is a pedestrian sort of boardwalk that follows the bay and you'll get to see lots of people out walking, especially during the evening, unless it's cool. Stop in a local hole-in-the-wall and have a chicken schwarma for me. They are tasty wrap sandwiches. You can try sheesha-flavored tobacco in a water pipe.

Having said all that, it's a pretty relaxing place and there's not a lot to do. Typical weekends for friends and I (high school age) would be taking a taxi to get schwarmas and juice, hanging out at a club or someone's house, maybe a bit of shopping (I understand they have a mall now), swimming, more swimming, going to smoke sheesha. One memorable event was going to the animal souq and buying a live duck for a friend's birthday. He was less than impressed.

Doha has decent shopping, especially for interesting ethnic things, but if you get a chance Dubai is the place to hit for that.

Oh, and if you have specific questions feel free to email. I can also try and ask my dad as he's been there much more recently, but he's on vacation at the moment so communication is sporadic.

Hi there, I visited Doha earlier this year. I recommend evening walks along the corniche, having a shisha at a small fishermans cafe near the port. Hanging around the centre of town eating in the small restraunts full of sri lankans and other asians.

There are some great desert trips. There is an english language paper and some interesting events (I saw Cat Stevens singing surahs from the koran and heard the impressive sheik hamza yusuf speak).

Not the most exciting place in the world, but if you make the effort you can have a very enjoyable stay.
