Dedicated Windows hosting recommendations?

I'm looking for some dedicated Windows hosting. Would like latest version of Windows Server 2003 Standard edition, MS SQL liscense, the whole she-bang. From around $150 -$350 a month? We have been checking out Ev1 Servers.

I can only speak for the Linux servers, but I've had excellent service from EV1. Amazing uptime and bandwidth.

SCO and EV1, FYI.

mbd1mbd1, that's completely irrelevant to this question.

Angry Modem: I wouldn't say completely irrelevant, as it shows an exceptional degree of stupidity in upper management at ev1 servers. Not something I look for in a hosting company.

Anyway, here's the best tip I can give on the hosting search:

Go to http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ and search in the dedicated hosting forum for any particular host you want to check out. Read the various threads about them. Basically, anytime a host crosses someone, has downtime, etc, it ends up there. Sure, you get some individual axe-grinding, but the whole picture of all the threads gives you a good idea of the host's track record and reputation.

Specific requests in a place like AskMe (sorry AskMe) are likely to just get you peoples pet favorite hosts, there aren't too many people who have seriously evaluated a good number of hosts.

I haven't used them (yet; I'm migrating from my colocated box to one of their Debian servers this summer) but I heard plenty of good about ServerBeach while researching potential hosting solutions. Their Windows 2003 servers don't come pre-installed with MS SQL, but you can certainly buy a license and install the software yourself. (You can also offset this cost using the referral code on the front page of Mailinator.com, if you like.)

$149/mo for 700GB of un-throttled transfer is a hell of a deal, I think.

I can fairly confidently recommend Alentus. I've only had one of their shared hosting plans, but I found them very reliable with excellent support even though I was only paying $15 a month.

Although on further review they are more expensive than the other options you're considering.

Not quite. By purchasing those licenses, they're insuring that their customers won't be affected in the rare case that SCO wins. And when SCO doesn't win, you think that money will just disappear? Of course not.

So, if you want the whole SCO IP decision to factor into whether someone was going to go for EV1, it's a positive thing, despite how "wrong" it may feel.

angry modem- It's putting your money where your beliefs are, pure and simple. People do it all the time, and a lot of people on the net feel very strongly about this issue. Not that I have need to, but I wouldn't do business with them for this very reason, given that there are many, many other companies who offer equivalent services without the thorny net-politics.

Very true, but if you're going to be buying based on your personal beliefs, I hardly think someone refusing to do business with any company making deals with SCO will be interested in Microsoft Windows hosting.

That'd be like if you were a democrat, and you refused to sell donuts to a republican, but turned around and sold a whole box to some neo-nazis.

SCO argument aside, EV1/Rackshack is a very good provider. They've got great customer service, very affordable pricing, and they're one of the few places I looked into whose IPs weren't blacklisted.

I've been using Rackshack for quite some time now and have zero complaints. Strong host, in my opinion.
