Color me confused

Color profile weirdness on my PowerBook. Of course there's...
When I analyse certain of my old digital shots (jpegs), Photoshop CS, iViewMedia Pro and ShoeBox say there is an sRGB color profile embedded in them; Preview, GraphicConverter 4 and iViewMedia Standard (an old edition) say there is no profile.
The apps that say there is no profile display the shots with a washed-out appearance, as I would have expected.
I can't find any pattern to which shots do or don't show the "false profile", other than that the vast majority of them have never been edited or processed in any way - they're straight from the camera.
There are a few old shots which all apps agree have no profile - these were most likely edited and saved specifically with no profile.
What gives? Who's correct? My later shots do have the sRGB profle embedded, and all the apps agree.
