Those MTV cabbie commercials.

Hey, remember those MTV commercials from the mid-90s with the creepy, sweaty cabbie? Who directed those? Who starred in them?

A few months ago, a movie dork friend and I had just watched a bizarre movie and then IMDBed the man behind it. He was an obscure gentleman of few credits whose name I can no longer recall, but I remember that he had directed those MTV spots. Who was this man, or at least who was the cabbie? And no, I don't remember the movie which had inspired this question at all, sorry.

The cabbie was Donal Logue, who's now in The knights of Prosperity. I don't know the rest.

Donal Logue as Jimmy McBride. (youtube)

Awesome, thanks! Donal Logue's name led me to Google the rest of it.

Those commercials were created by Jesse Peretz, of the band The Lemonheads, and Clay Tarver of the band Chavez, who co-wrote Joy Ride and directed some of the Upright Citizens Brigade TV show.

I don't know why I had remembered Joy Ride as having been "bizarre." It's just a relatively normal, although somewhat awesome, popcorn movie. At any rate, it was notable enough for us to have IMDBed it afterwards, I guess.

Heh. Yeah, his name is Donal Logue. But I even after his OK TV stints, I will always think of him as Quinn, for obvious reasons.

isn't it ironic, don't you think? it's like when you meet the girl of your dreams and find out she's five.

i tend to use that quote...a lot. it sums up the 90s very well for me.

(thanks for all of this btw)

Thanks for the memories! Like, I kept seeing this ad for this great new TV show called "Sabotage". Looked like it had some great characters, like this guy named Cochese. But they never said when it was on.

(I paraphrase.)

to kind of piggyback on this, does anyone remember a MTV commercial with a kind of stoner/loser outside a convenience store who said things like:

"hey go inside and buy me Tallboy"

and

"I drink milk on occasion- straight from the cow's teat."

I thought maybe it could be one of these:

featuring Jay and Silent Bob, but I don't see it there- and also I was a huge Clerks fan so I would've realized it, unless it came out before I had seen the movie.

Anybody else remember this?

I think the stoner might've been Norm MacDonald, who also did similar commercials as superspy Cobalt.

I think you might be right. Even in my hazy teenaged memories I can sort of hear Norm's distinctive voice, now that you mentioned it.

In case anyone cares, in the 90s, David Fincher directed those Nike spots with Dennis Hopper.
