Question: Burnin' Up For Some Burmese

Are there any Burmese restaurants in the Toronto area?

I had a proper Burmese dinner while doing a short trek in the northern part of the country last year, and it was one of the best meals of my life. I can't seem to find any listings for Burmese restaurants in Toronto, however. Do any exist?

I don't know if this restaurant still exists - it doesn't on Google Maps - but it appears to have been a Burmese restaurant in Toronto not too long ago. Try giving them a call.

Other than that, you can get something resembling Burmese food, though perhaps bastardized/fusionized, at Eastern Twist.

Yup - Motherhouse and Eastern Twist are the best-known. Butler's Pantry also has at least one Burmese dish (khaw-sway) but they're not strictly a Burmese restaurant; their menu's a total pastiche.

You know, I'd try posting your question on the Toronto Chowhound board -- those folks would definitely have the inside track. I'd bet there are little holes-in-the-wall in this city that you wouldn't find on the 'net, like in a strip mall in Scarborough or something. You also might find some Burmese or Burmese-Chinese cuisine in one of the Chinatowns, particularly those specialising in south China food. I understand the Burmese community in Toronto is quite small, though.

Oh - and try checking vegetarian listings - I assume there's a Buddhist element to Burmese food?
