It's a Rainbow. Actually, it's more like half of a rainbow at the moment. Care to help me find the remainder of the lyrics? I've already exhausted simple Google searches, unfortunately, and there's much

The cassette tape on which the song resided was a fixture in the tape deck of my mother's car for a period of several months at least a decade ago. When presented with my recollection of the song, my mother and siblings confirmed that it was more or less accurate, but couldn't recall any other lyrics.

(The tape had been worn out or destroyed by this time.)

Caveat: The 'yeah' interjection which immediately follows the question 'What does he get?' was actually a spoken 'I know!' in the original song. I went with the former for the same reason I never wear turquoise slacks: I'm incredibly insecure in my masculinity. Give me a break, man, I'm already singing about rainbows!

After Googling several different combinations of these lyrics to no avail, I started to focus on context instead. The tape on which the song appeared was titled Jesus Put The Song In My Heart, and featured the following additional material (parentheses denote original artist/songwriter):

Jesus Put The Song In My Heart (Psalty/Kids Praise)
I Am A Promise (Gaither)
Kids Under Construction (Gaither)
Step Into The Sunshine ( Evie)
Do It Right The First Time
I Hate Bugs

Unfortunately, Googling remembered lyrics from these songs has also proven useless; The Psalty and Evie compositions return no results beyond those referring to their original appearance. The Gaither compositions have each seen more covers than a veteran call girl. The two remaining compositions are simply too obscure; the former's lyrics generated no leads at all, while the latter generated only one, which dead-ended maddeningly at an abandoned weblog a few days ago.

As a last ditch effort, I contacted Ernie Rettino (who voiced Psalty and wrote or co-wrote most Kids Praise songs) to ask him who might have been given license to use his composition. He was friendly, but completely uninvolved in licensing and unable to help.

(A few more tidbits I couldn't work into the narrative: I've tried using AllMusic's database. The Psalty song dates the tape sometime after 1984, though the instrumentation and 'style' suggest production in the early 1990's.)

I've had no luck in finding your "It's A Rainbow" lyrics, but I did find out that "Jesus Put The Song In My Heart" is part of a whole Kids Praise series (wikipedia page here)... Maybe you already knew all of that, but I thought the Wikipedia page might jog your memory and help you figure out a new direction to search.

Best answer: Here are a few different lyrics (a couple of ones I didn't hear you sing), which I found by googling "prettiest colors" and "hard to imagine":

God takes some sunshine and adds some rain
then puts 'em together in His own special way
and what does He get? - it's a rainbow!

Takes the prettiest colors that could ever be
and paints up the heavens for us to see
and what does He get? - it's a rainbow!

It's hard to imagine these colors so bright
came out of the sky filled with thunder and lightning
but, God has the power to take something frightening
and turn it into a beautiful sight!

God takes the darkness of a stormy day
and lights up the world with a dazzling display
and what do we get? - it's a rainbow!

God keeps His Promise when He gives us a sign
of His unending Love for all mankind
and what do we get? - it's a rainbow!

You're very brave, and I'm sure you look great in turuoise slacks!

Response by poster: O_o

How in the hell did I miss that?

Yep, those are the lyrics.

Much thanks, iconomy. I'd been searching for ages!

Sometimes it's just a matter of hitting upon the right combo of search terms. Glad to help!
