Question: Promposal!

Beautiful, quiet, or out-of-the-way locations in San Diego one might go to should they want a special place to propose to someone? I'm going to pop the question to my girlfriend of... uh.. a month... in San Diego on New Years Eve. She already knows and she's going to say yes, but I want it to be special and breathtaking none-the-less. Even though I lived in San Diego for two years, I can't think of any really, really great places to do this. Any recommendations? Bonus points for restaurant and/or hotel suggestions, again, with a romantic leaning. Thank you Mefites!

Is this going to happen at midnight?

- There's a secluded fountain below the Prado restaurant in Balboa park. Few people every go there. If you were there before the restaurant opened you'd have the whole area to yourself most likely.

- At La Jolla cove, just south of the seal beach there's a little grassy area that many people use for weddings. It's a spectacular locations. Not secluded though, so doing this during a weekday would be best.

- Silver Strand beach is a huge section of sand that will be nearly deserted this time of year.

- If you get there early you'll have the Star Of India all to yourself.

- If you don't mind driving to Orange County, The Queen Mary would be a fantastic place to do this.

I was going to propose at that la jolla cove spot Tiddles mentions, but a last minute change made it so that I proposed to her at home after i cooked her a nice candle-lit dinner. I still would have liked to use that spot, though.

One of the best sites for all things san diego wedding related is Bridal Insider. Sign up for the forums there (free) and you can find out how hundreds and hundreds of proposals in the san diego area happened. They might give you some ideas. As for planning the wedding, that site was invaluable for research of wedding location, vendors, etc. (don't be dissuaded by the "bridal" part - i was the groom and i used that site extensively)

Up on the cliffs above Torrey Pines. Sunset up there is gorgeous, the view is so vast that you can see the curvature of the earth.

The San Diego Chargers have a game on New Year's Eve (it's a day game, though).

Get your message up on the scoreboard by calling their promotions department (you'll pay a small fee).

Yes, it's corny. It's romantic. It's memorable.

I'm thinking the fountain after dinner that night might be the way to go. Maybe get a bottle of her favorite wine and two wine glasses engraved with our names and the date on them, then open the bottle, pour two glasses, and pop the question. I wish I were more creative, darn it.
