Any tips on San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina? I'm going next week on a last-minute trip and would appreciate any pointers/recommendations.

I was lucky enough to find a great airfare. . . Now I'm trying to find a place to stay. Think low budget. I'm traveling solo and don't need anything special.

Also, any restaurant, ice cream shop or excursion tips would be welcome.

I was in Bariloche last year, and I remember there was this amazing hostel at the top floor of an office building. It was cheap and the view was incredible. I can't remember the name, but there is only one office building in SA de B, so it should be easy to find. Remember, Bariloche is crowded at this time of the year, so it is a good idea to reserve in advance.

For ice cream, you will find simply the best Dulce de Leche ice cream on earth at Jauja. Do remember to taste the chocolate at Mamushka

Do a small trek to the summit of Cerro Otto and rent a bike the next day to ride the Circuito Chico (~60km). Do not forget sun block, I came back with a massive sun burns.

The hostel you're talking about, is it this place? It looks perfect, but I called and they're booked up. No surprise because, like you said, it's getting to be high season.

I've jotted down the other tips -- the bike rental idea sounds great. Thanks!

I was there several years ago. Unfortunately, I can't remember the names of the places I stayed. I do know you'll find folks at the bus station who rent out rooms in their home that are pretty affordable, and I've heard good things from some of the other travelers I ran across.

veggiboy : Yes that was it. Also, check out the Patagonia museum near the city hall.
