Please help with suitable nightlife (good bars) in Monterrey, Mexico. From the U.S. and looking for something cool/funky. No dance clubs please. Will be here for three nights and located downtown. Willing to taxi anywhere. Local flavor a plus. Thanks.

I'm not completely sure what you're asking for, so if you can be more specific, I might be able to help you more. These are all places with loud music in English:

Kokoloco is good on Fridays, but very crowded and it's not easy to get a table.

Nirvana has great music and is not so crowded on weekdays.

Cafe Iguana may also be what you're looking for. (Link has sound).

Kokoloco and Cafe Iguana are both located in the Barrio Antiguo, in downtown Monterrey. You could just ask the cab driver to drop you off there and walk around until you find a bar you like (there are dozens in that area).

Nirvana is a little farther away, but a cab shouldn't cost you more than $5 or $6.

I second just walking around in the Barrio Antiguo. LOTS of stuff going on down there.
